Sodium vapor lighting has played a major role in global street lighting systems for decades. The two primary types—Low Pressure Sodium (LPS) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS)—share the same chemical element but differ significantly in performance, spectrum, efficiency, and real-world applications.

Sodium-based lighting systems are discharge lamps that use excited sodium vapor to produce visible light. The two main categories are:

- Warm golden-white light output
- Better color rendering than LPS
